Timeline: Becoming Jane Doe
With a flurry of activity in 1988, our Jane Doe acquired a new identity, starting with the birth certificate of a girl named Becky Sue Turner who died years earlier in Fife.

July 18, 1969 Becky Sue Turner born in Bakersfield, Calif.

Dec. 30, 1971 Becky Sue dies in Fife, Pierce County, house fire at age 2

1986 Kimberly McLean leaves home in Pennsylvania at age 18.

May 20, 1988 Jane Doe gets a copy of Becky Sue’s birth certificate from Kern County, Calif.

June 16, 1988 Jane Doe obtains an Idaho ID card with her picture and Becky Sue’s name. She has government ID “proving” she’s Becky Sue.

July 5, 1988 She gets her name legally changed in a Dallas, Texas, court from Becky Sue Turner to Lori Erica Kennedy.

July 12, 1988 Applies for and receives a Social Security number as Lori Kennedy.

July 13, 1988 Obtains a Texas ID card.

April 18, 1989 Obtains Texas driver’s license, stating she is 19 years old.

March 19, 1990 Applies for a U.S. passport.

Oct. 1, 1990 Enrolls at Dallas County Community College after obtaining GED.

Feb. 21, 1997 Files for Chapter 13 bankruptcy.

Dec. 13, 1997 Graduates from the University of Texas at Arlington with a degree in business administration.

Jan. 5, 2004 Marries Jon Blakely “Blake” Ruff in Denton County, Texas. Her name is now Lori Ruff.

Sept. 15, 2008 Blake and Lori have a daughter.

Dec. 24, 2010 Lori dies in Longview, Texas.

Jan. 1, 2011 Ruff family finds strongbox showing Lori was not who she claimed.

Sept. 1, 2011 Social Security Administration opens investigation to identify Jane Doe.

June 22, 2013 Seattle Times article sparks new interest in the case.

June 2013 Forensic genealogist Colleen Fitzpatrick sees the story and talks with investigator Joe Velling.

2014 Using DNA supplied by the Ruff family, Fitzpatrick starts building a family tree for Lori, matching her DNA with blood relatives.

December 2015 Fitzpatrick identifies Lori as a member of a Philadelphia family, the Cassidys.

March 2016 Investigator Joe Velling flies to Philadelphia to meet the Cassidys.

March 2016 The Cassidys identify "Lori" as a blood relative, Kimberly McLean. Further DNA tests confirm the match.

Sept. 19, 2016 Lori Ruff's name is removed from the federal database for missing and unidentified persons (NamUS.com).
