A solemn promise
The Nez Perce people in their treaty of 1855 with the United States relinquished title to their lands except for 7.5 million acres reserved for their exclusive use. The tribe also retained its hunting, fishing, and gathering rights in all of its traditional use areas beyond the borders of the reservation. But the United States quickly went back on those promises.
